When I journey into new cultures my sketchbook opens
and engages me with the world -
the people, the customs, the creatures, the elements.
The sketchbook is the catalyst and receiver of
my curiosity and delight.

A map of Guinea & Conakry the capital that gave me another way to tell the story of my rich and complex time there.
In the village of Kibola in Guinea during a visit to my friend Mimo’s home where I collapsed deeply then rose up and did this watercolor, feeling re-born.
On a boat in Alaska. Suddenly there was the splash of porpoises off the side. They were leaping along with us. I grabbed my brushes and paints and caught the life.
In Kathamandu, Nepal staying near the Great Stupa in Boudhanath, the eyes at the top of the stupa gazing in all directions, the prayer flags fluttering, movement all around.
In Machu Picchu, Peru I looked up from my studies of the rock walls towards dark clouds building and moving. I painted fast as the rain approached and finished just in time.
In India I collected the wide variety of marks made on the foreheads each day by the followers of Shiva and Vishnu, gradually understanding the shapes and symbols and uniqueness of the expression.
